some feedback from our Islay trip February 2005.......
Islay/Jura Distilleries Tour - 27 February to 5 March 2005
"Firstly, a warning. If you like malt whisky and have not visited Islay before, doing this tour first might make any independent future visit there something of an anticlimax.
Highlights? We didn't do highlights. There may have been the odd almost imperceptible dip from the peak, e.g. it rained on Thursday evening when we were in the pub. Still, if you insist, here are a few of many memorable happenings, not in any particular order.
Firstly, some unexpected bonuses:
An unscheduled trip around the Springbank distillery.
The view to sea through the stills at Caol Ila.
A "vertical tasting" of five new spirits on a second visit to Bruichladdich.
A "mobile tasting" of 35 yr. old Strathisla and a cask strength
Caol Ila while travelling through Glasgow on the return.
And from the itinerary:
The warmth of welcome and the accommodation at Bowmore.
The visit to Kilchoman to see a newly built distillery just weeks from starting
production.
The cask tastings.
The enthusiasm and friendliness of just about everyone we met in a distillery.
The visit to the Islay brewery - excellent ales.
Golden eagles, hen harriers, buzzards, seals etc. etc.
The weather - quite amazing for the time of year.
Oh yes, and the countless dram tastings, all good, many wonderful. Anyone for detox?" - John Moore, Lichfield
"David, many thanks for a great week on a great island. If this first trip is any indication of how well the next ones will be organised then people will have a great time. Having re-read Peat, Smoke and Spirt since we've been back it only reinforced what a good time we had. Putting faces to names and places to events put a wry smile on my face! The jetty at Bowmore at midnight, the tasting at Bruichladdich and the taxi ride from Port Charlotte (Lamont's Taxi 01496 810 449) were highlights of a memorable trip. All the best - Iain Banks, Buxton"
